Large Canvas Prints in Canada — A Buyer's Guide
Big canvas printing has become one of the most popular ways to display photography in Canadian homes — and for good reason. A large canvas print does something that no framed photo or poster can quite replicate: it removes the visual barrier between the image and the wall, making the photo feel like it belongs in the room rather than sitting on it.
What makes "large" actually large?
In the canvas printing industry, prints above 20×24″ are generally considered large format. At that size, you start to see the photo in your peripheral vision while standing in front of it — which changes how the image feels emotionally. Sizes like 30×40″ and 40×60″ are considered statement or gallery scale, because they anchor an entire wall the way a painting in a gallery does.
The difference between a 16×20″ and a 30×40″ isn't just size — it's presence. Small prints ask you to walk up and look at them. Large canvas prints draw you in from across the room.
Large canvas printing in Canada — what to look for
Not every canvas printer in Canada operates at the same standard, and the differences matter more at large scale than they do for small prints. Here's what separates a large canvas that holds up from one that doesn't:
- Frame depth matters at large size. A 1″ frame may be fine for an 8×10″, but a 40×60″ canvas needs at least 1.5″ of depth for structural rigidity. Thin frames flex and bow over time, especially in homes where humidity changes seasonally — which is most of Canada.
- Pigment inks, not dye inks. Dye-based printing is cheaper, but the inks sit on the canvas surface and degrade faster under UV exposure. Pigment-based inks penetrate the canvas fibre and are significantly more stable over time.
- Canvas tension is a craft, not a machine task. Hand-stretched canvases have more consistent tension across the surface than machine-clamped ones. At large sizes, uneven tension shows as visible distortion or "soft" areas in the centre of the canvas.
- Viewing distance changes the quality threshold. A large canvas is typically viewed from 1.5–3 metres away. This means you don't need the resolution of a magazine print — but you do need enough resolution that the image looks sharp and detailed from that viewing distance. Our upload tool accounts for this when checking your photo.
Big canvas prints as gifts
Large canvas prints have become one of the most-gifted items for weddings, housewarmings, anniversaries, and milestone birthdays — because they're personal in a way that bought gifts simply aren't. You're giving someone a memory they already have, made into something they can see every day.
The most frequently gifted large canvas sizes in Canada are 30×40″ for portrait photos and 40×30″ for landscape shots — large enough to feel like a genuine statement piece without being overwhelming in a typical Canadian home.
We ship to every province and territory, including Toronto, Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Ottawa, and everywhere between. Free, tracked, and within 3–7 business days.
Hanging a large canvas print
Large canvases ship with hanging hardware included. For prints up to 30×40″, a standard 20-pound picture hook handles the weight without issue. For larger sizes — 36×48″ and above — we recommend two anchor points for stability, and include the hardware to do this. The back of the canvas shows both the hanging wire and the corner key locations, so there's no guesswork.
If you're unsure where to hang a large canvas in your space, a simple rule: the centre of the canvas should sit approximately 145–150cm from the floor — roughly eye level for a standing adult. This applies whether the print is above a sofa, a bed, or standing alone on a wall.
